The BlueBeam is designed to allow a Sony Playstation 3 to be integrated into an IR remote control system. The PS3 accepts only Bluetooth commands, but the BlueBeam allows any universal IR remote, that is capable of learning the PS3 commands, to control the PS3. The installation guide focuses on the Logitech Harmony remote, but other learning remotes or home control systems may be used.

In this system, the BlueBeam is used with an optional external power supply (Model 571-013). No physical connection to the PS3 is required, and batteries are not used. The installer must simply pair the BlueBeam with the PlayStation 3 console and plug in the power adapter.

To avoid a bulky power supply, the BlueBeam can use its internal AA batteries. To maximize battery life, the installer may connect the BlueBeam to the PlayStation 3 with a USB-A to USB-Mini cable. Battery power is used to recognize "power on" commands, but once the PlayStation 3 is active, power from its USB ports takes over operation of the BlueBeam. Battery life in this configuration is 1-2 years.

For maximum installation flexibility, the BlueBeam's internal batteries enable totally wireless operation - no power cords, USB cables, or any other physical connection. AA battery life is typically six months to one year in this configuration, similar to the life of disposable remote control batteries.

Q. The BlueBeam can be powered three different ways, but what are the advantages of each?
A. The BlueBeam includes two AA batteries, and no other power source is required, so this is a very good way to power the BlueBeam. To save on battery power usage, the BlueBeam may be powered through any USB connection; however, if the BlueBeam is powered via the PS3 USB connection with no batteries, the BlueBeam is not capable of turning the PS3 on. This is because the PS3 does not supply power through USB when it is off. The combination of USB and battery power is generally the ideal way to power the BlueBeam, but for installations where the Bluebeam is not near the PS3, it may be powered via AC to DC power adapter. Order the 571-013 power supply for this application.

Q. Can I use the BlueBeam right away, or do I have to set it up using the PC software?
A. The BlueBeam is ready to pair with your PS3 as soon as you apply power, and will begin functioning with no further setup. The PC application simply provides advanced features, macros and settings for advanced integration.
